The Dhāraṇī for Prostrating Before a Sacred Support
(rten la phyag ‘tshal ba’i gzungs)

In the presence of a sacred support (for the Buddha’s body, speech and mind, rten) endowed with the essence of the relics of the Bliss Farer (Sugata, the Buddha), while doing a full prostration in which the five limbs [including the head] touch the ground, think that your own body and those of others multiply into as many emanations as there are particles of dust in the world, and bow down. Contemplating thus, recite the following as you prostrate:
NAMO MANJUŚRĪYE/ NAMASSA ŚRĪYE/ NAMAH UTTAMA ŚRĪYE [SVĀHĀ]
NAMO MANJUSHRĪYE/ NAMASSA SHRĪYE/ NAMAH UTTAMA SHĪYE [SWĀHĀ]
Or more commonly:
NAMO MANJUSHRĪYE/ NAMASSA SHRĪYE/ NAMAH UTTAMA SHĪYE [SŌHĀ]]
NAMASSA ŚRĪYE is often written elsewhere as NAMO SUŚRĪYE.
SVĀHĀ (SWĀHĀ/ SŌHĀ) is not included in this version of the mantra, but is commonly added to the end. It has been added in brackets for those who wish to recite it.
In so doing, you come to pay homage and render service before the eminence of all Suchness Farers (Tathāgatas).

“sacred support endowed with the essence of the relics of the Bliss Farer” (bde bar gshegs pa’i ring bsrel gyi snying po can gyi rten): This implies a support that has been consecrated, usually via a consecration ritual (rab gnas kyi cho ga), which usually includes placing relics of the Buddha or other deceased Buddhist masters somewhere inside the support which is being consecrated.
Erick Tsiknopoulos (b. 1981) is an American translator of Tibetan, a scholar, researcher and postgraduate student in Buddhist Studies, a teacher and tutor of Tibetan language, a writer and editor, a voracious reader in various subjects, and an experienced world traveler. He is the founder and primary Tibetan translator of the Sugatagarbha Translation Group, and the creator of their main website, Tibetan-Translations.com, which currently features English translations of over 400 Tibetan texts. Many of his translations have been published in various forms, including as books.
He has been a student of Buddhism since 1999, a student of Tibetan Buddhism since 2003, and a student of Tibetan language since 2005. He has been translating Tibetan texts into English since 2007, has been based in India and Nepal studying Tibetan language and Buddhism intensively and translating Tibetan texts since 2008, and has been working professionally as a Tibetan-English translator and interpreter since 2009.
