It is mainly associated with the Jonang school (and also to a lesser extent the Géluk school), but its roots are in India. Hence, contrary to some sources, the main practices of the Jonang school (and in this respect also some of those of the Géluk school) indeed come from India; and are hence included in the ‘Eight Great Chariots of the Practice Lineage’ (sgrub brgyud shing rta chen mo brgyad).

Her name, dMag-zor in Tibetan, Pāravatī in Sanskrit, means ‘Military Sorceress’; and indicates offensive and defensive magic. She is also known as ‘Queen Pāravatī’ or ‘Military Sorceress Queen’ (Tib. dmag zor rmyal mo, Skt. Śrīmatī Pāravatī).

These, which are correlated to the “three places” (gnas gsum) of body, speech and mind on the heart, throat and forehead respectively, are said to the abodes of the Heroes/Ḍākas and Sky Dancers/Ḍākiṇīs. Here, their pure aspect (dag) is emphasized.
